1.  Simple Installation Instructions from CD

Q:  Is it easy to install the WorkWORLD software on my computer from the CD-ROM?

A:  Yes. WorkWORLD installs easily, just like most other Windows programs do. If you have installed other programs, installing WorkWORLD will seem familiar.

On most computers, simply insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive to begin installation automatically. Follow the simple on-screen instructions, and accept all the default choices for quick installation.

If installation does not start automatically once you insert the CD-ROM into the drive, it just means that the Autorun feature on your computer has been turned off. Leave the CD-ROM in its drive, and click the Windows Start button. Then select Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. From the Install/Uninstall tab (or "Add New Programs" choice in Windows 2000 or XP), click the Install button (or the "CD or Floppy button" in Windows 2000 or XP) and follow the on-screen instructions.

Complete, detailed installation instructions with explanations and pictures of typical installation screens are available should you experience any problem during installation of the software. If you need additional help installing WorkWORLD software on your computer, contact the WorkWORLD technical support staff via email at WorkWORLD@vcu.edu, or call the Help Desk at (804) 828-2665 (M-F, 8:30am-6pm Eastern time).

2.  Virus Protection and Other Programs Running During Installation

Q:  Should I turn off my virus protection program before installing WorkWORLD?

A:  As with all Windows programs, before you install WorkWORLD you should close all other applications running on your computer. Frequent causes of failed installations include screen saver, virus protection, and network access programs running in the background.

For computers using Windows 98, 98SE, and ME the best environment for installation occurs when the only programs shown in the Windows list of running tasks are Systray and Explorer, however your computer may need to run other essential programs. You can see this list by pressing and holding down simultaneously the Control, Alternate, and Delete keys. Make sure you don't do this twice in a row; that will cause your computer to immediately reboot. If you don't know how to use the Close Programs window, see your Windows Help system for instructions.

If your computer uses Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or is connected to a network, the precautions you should take during the installation procedure may be dependent on the configuration of your particular network. Additionally, the configuration of your particular PC may further determine the steps you should follow. See your Network Administrator for guidance.

Remember to re-enable your virus protection software once installation is complete.

3.  Virus Protection from WorkWORLD

Q:  I am afraid to turn off my virus protection program during installation. How can I protect against a virus in WorkWORLD itself?

A:  ESI takes precautions against spreading viruses. All our computers employ automatic virus detection software, with the latest available data files. Distribution media is checked before shipment to help guard against any inadvertent release of a virus.

You can easily check the files contained on the WorkWORLD distribution CD with your own anti-virus program. All good virus protection programs allow you to scan specific drives on demand to check for viruses. Before you open or run any files on a WorkWORLD distribution disk, set your virus protection program to scan the drive you will be using to read the WorkWORLD program disk. Be sure to set the scan parameters to include subfolders, scan all files (not just exe or program files), and scan within compressed files. If you don't know how to do this, read the manual or the help system for your particular anti-virus program.

When you have finished installing WorkWORLD, remember to re-enable the automatic features of your virus protection program.

4.  Uninstalling Previous Versions of WorkWORLD

Q:  Do I need to uninstall my previous version of WorkWORLD before I install the new version?

A:  No. By default, the new version of WorkWORLD will be installed in a different directory than the old version, and will appear as a separate entry on the Start, Programs list.

After a successful installation of the new version, you will be able to run both the old and new versions on your computer. This feature of the installation routine is designed to allow you to verify that the new version was installed correctly and is operating properly before you uninstall the old version. You may also wish to convert saved cases from an older version to the new version before you uninstall the old version.

When you are certain you no longer need the older version of WorkWORLD, you can regain the disk space it occupies by uninstalling it. See the Uninstall Instructions topic for links to complete details.

5.  Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista, and Administrator Privileges

Q:  Why do I need administrator privileges in order to install WorkWORLD on a computer that uses Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista?

A:  Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista prevent users who sign on with less than an administrator privilege level from writing any files in the system directories. WorkWORLD may need to have certain core system files added or updated on your system. If you are not signed on with a privilege level that allows you to modify system files, the installation will fail when this occurs. Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista will not permit a user without authorization to change a system directory.

If you do not have administrator privileges for the computer you wish to install WorkWORLD on, see your Network Administrator for guidance on how to install WorkWORLD before you try to do so.

6.  Rebooting After Installing WorkWORLD

Q:  Must I reboot after installing WorkWORLD?

A:  Not all installations will require a reboot of Windows; this depends on which Windows system files were installed previously on your computer. The actual decompression and copying of files from the WorkWORLD disk is sometimes not all that is required to fully install a program under the Windows operating system. Once all the required files have been copied to your hard disk, Windows may need to be rebooted so that it can start with all its required components and finish updating its registry.

7.  WorkWORLD and the Programs Menu

Q:  I installed WorkWORLD but it does not show up next to my old version of WorkWORLD on the Programs menu. Where is it?

A:  Notice that on your Start, Programs menu there are two sections. The first part shows program folders and the second shows individual programs. The program folders all have submenus. The new version of WorkWORLD will be located in this section. (In some previous versions, WorkWORLD appeared in the individual programs section.) Also note that on some systems, all newly installed programs will appear and stay at the very bottom of the list, until you manually sort the list.

The folder name you see will be "WorkWORLD". It will have a subfolder that contains two entries. The first, "WorkWORLD" will start the complete program. The second, "WorkWORLD Help," will start the Help/Information System only, without the program.

If the program names listed are not in alphabetical order, you can reorder them by right-clicking your mouse when the program list is on screen. Choose the "Sort by Name" option and left-click on it. The list will be sorted alphabetically with all folders listed first, followed by individual programs See your Windows Help system for further instructions.

Note that this version of WorkWORLD will automatically install an icon on your desktop. You can identify it by the WorkWorld globe icon with the "WorkWorld" caption. Double click the icon to start WorkWORLD.

8.  Old Saved Case Files and New Version of WorkWORLD

Q:  I installed WorkWORLD but it has no saved cases. My previous version has a number of saved case files that I would like to use with the new version. How can I get them into the new version without re-entering all the data?

A:  WorkWORLD has features that makes it easy to use previously saved files. You can use them to copy old case files from a previous version into the new version.

To use these features, start your old version of WorkWORLD. Click "Tools" on the main menu near the top of the WorkWORLD screen, then select "Export" on the resulting drop-down menu. You will see a list of all of your case files you previously saved.

Click the "Select All" button if you wish to copy all of your existing files into the new WorkWORLD version. If you only want a few of the files in the new WorkWORLD version, you may selectively choose the ones you want. Next, click the "Export" button to create External Case Files for the selected files.

Now exit the old version of WorkWORLD and start the new version you just installed. Click "Tools" on the main menu near the top of the WorkWORLD screen, then select "Import" on the resulting drop-down menu. Click the "Browse" button and navigate to the folder containing the External Case Files you created from the older WorkWORLD version. You will see a list of all of your case files you previously saved.

Click the "Select All" button to select all the files, then click the "Import" button. All of the files you selected from your older WorkWORLD version will now be in your new version, and you may open, review, or edit them normally.

Note that when you convert old cases, you may notice that once you open them in the new WorkWORLD version, one or more situations may be incomplete. This will occur when the new version of WorkWORLD has new questions that did not exist in the old version, and because of answers in the old file the new questions now require an answer.

A comprehensive overview and detailed explanation of the operation of the Import and Export tools can be found in the Help Information System of WorkWORLD. Read the topics "Export a Case File - Overview" and "Import a Case File - Overview" to begin learning about conversion. These topics are found in the Using WorkWORLD book, Operating WorkWORLD chapter in the Help Information Table of Contents (Click the yellow "?" button on the WorkWORLD toolbar to open). You can also click the "Help" button on the Import and Export Screens to bring up the topic.

10.  WorkWORLD on Windows Vista Systems

Q:  Why do I see the message "Why can't I get Help from this program?", or "There was a problem running the macro. (1037)"?

A:  These messages occur as a result of Microsoft's decision to omit a program that WorkWORLD requires from Vista. WorkWORLD (both the Complete Program and stand-alone Help/Information System versions) has been tested on the Windows Vista operating system. It installs correctly and will operate correctly after installing and registering a Windows Vista operating system file that does not ship as a component of the Windows Vista operating system.

Required Steps
In order to use the WorkWORLD Help/Information System that is in both WorkWORLD versions with Windows Vista, users must download the missing Windows 32-bit Help program file from the Microsoft Download Center, and then install it on their computers. After installing the downloaded program, users must update their system registry to correctly use the program by downloading and executing a small registry merge file available from the WorkWORLD website.

Step 1
To obtain the Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows Vista, go to the Microsoft Download Center online at:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82148

Follow the instructions on that page to first validate that your copy of Windows is genuine, and then download the appropriate version of the file to your computer. Note that there are two versions, one for 32-bit systems (which is what most users have), and the other for 64-bit systems. Select, download, and install the version that matches your system.

Step 2
Next, obtain the Windows Vista Help Registry file (VistaWinHlp32.reg) from the WorkWORLD website Downloads page at:
http://www.workworld.org/DownloadMain.html#VistaHelpReg

Follow the on-screen prompts to download and save the file on your computer. Then, using Windows Explorer, double-click on the saved file name to update your systems registry.

Your WorkWORLD software will now operate properly with Windows Vista.

A document, "WorkWORLD on Windows Vista Systems Quick Start", containing these instructions in MS Word format is available for download.
