State Median Income

The tables below show Estimated State Median Income by state for a 4-person family for current and previous Federal Fiscal Years (FFY). These figures (or a percentage of them) are used by some states as the maximum income level allowed in determining income eligibility for certain programs, such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) or Federal Child Care and Development Funds (CCDF). Figures in the tables below have been published in the Federal Register for use in the LIHEAP program.

Note that the estimates shown in the tables are for use in determining program eligibility in the specific Federal Fiscal Years shown. They are based on income that was received by the Current Population Survey respondents during the calendar year three years earlier. In other words, the estimated median income used for eligibility determinations in Fiscal Year 2005 (which actually began October 1, 2004 and ended September 30, 2005) was based on income received during calendar year 2002 (January 1, 2002 through December 31, 2002).

See the notes below the tables for directions on how to compute values for family sizes other than four, and for historical data and additional explanation.
